Making Friends at the Vegetarian Expo

Last weekend devotees from the Hare Krishna Society attended the second annual "Christchurch Vegetarian Expo." This year's Expo, being larger than the previous one, attracted people from a wide range of ages and cultural backgrounds. Here in Christchurch we operate three cafes, all in the inner city and are therefore well known to "The Christchurch Vegetarian Society" who organized the Expo. Earlier in the year we also hosted an evening at our "Krishna Café" for those who participated in a Vegan Triathlon.

Leading up to the Expo we spent many long hours in the kitchen preparing and cooking traditional Indian food as well as vegan pies, filled breads, cakes, ginger crunch, burfi, sweet balls, etc, and also offered a wide range of organic drinks. The Krishna food stand ‘Soul Food’ soon became the most popular place for good eating and devotees worked non-stop for six hours serving out delicious Krishna prasadam to the enthusiastic crowds. This Expo gives great exposure to our cafes, allowing many new people to discover the higher experience of food offered to Lord Krishna.

We find that our cafes are great outlets for giving Krishna in a most wonderful way. Many of the people that come to our cafes might be very hesitant to ever attend a temple or buy a book from a devotee, but they will happily purchase Krishna prasadam! They will happily sit with their friends and eat, while hearing transcendental sound vibrations in the association of devotees. This is Lord Krishna’s and Srila Prabhupada’s great trick and gift.

In this way we are making many friends as they begin their spiritual journey back to Lord Krishna’s eternal abode.
